Southend Stop The War Coalition open meeting:
7:30pm Thursday 15th September
at the meeting room next to Southend Mosque, West Road, Southend (entrance in Gainsborough Drive)
"Iraq, Afghanistan - the War on Terror 10 Years on"
Speaker: Chris Nineham, from the national Stop The War Coalition
It is 10 years since Tony Blair joined George W Bush's invasion of Afghanistan and subsequently the invasion of Iraq in the wake of 9/11.
Blair and Bush are no longer in power, but foreign troops remain in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan drags on with further British casulaties and an untold number of deaths amongst Afghan civilians.
We were told that we would bring democracy to the region, that we would be safer at home and the wars would soon be over. None of these promises were true.
The Stop The War Coalition was set up a few weeks after 9/11 and the Southend Coalition joined in right at the start with a vigil against the bombing of Afghanistan.
To mark 10 years of continued war there will an Occupation of Trafalgar Square in London on Saturday 8th October. This meeting is to discuss where we are after 10 years, what the Western powers are up to and how we can end the war in Afghanistan.
